Bergisel - a place with history

If you are interested in Austrian history, you have probably come across the following name: Andreas Hofer. Andreas Hofer was the leader of the Tyrolean uprising of 1809 and is considered a freedom fighter against the Bavarian and French occupation of his homeland. The battles on the Bergisel were directed against the Napoleonic French and their allies, the Bavarians. The reason for the Bergisel battles was Bavarian rule in Tyrol, which led to massive interference in traditional religious life. At the beginning of April 1809, the "Landsturm" rose up throughout Tyrol and the battle for Innsbruck broke out on 12 April 1809. Even today, Andreas Hofer is often honoured with numerous monuments as a folk hero and, in a glorifying way, also as a national hero. Naturally also on the Bergisel in Innsbruck.
