City trip: towns worth seeing in Tyrol

When you think of towns in Tyrol, you think of Innsbruckthe most famous city in the region, probably springs immediately to mind. But Tyrol has many other charming towns to offer, which may be smaller but are just as worth seeing. Here is a brief insight into four impressive towns in Tyrol:

Hall in Tyrol

Hall in Tirol, just 15 kilometres from Innsbruck, has the largest old town in Tirol. Historically rich due to the salt trade and minting of coins, Hall is home to Hasegg Castle with a minting museum and an impressive view from the castle tower. The picturesque old town centre with its narrow alleyways, shops, cafés and restaurants invites you to take a stroll.

Schwaz

Schwaz was the largest mining metropolis in Europe in the 15th and 16th centuries thanks to its rich silver and copper deposits. Historical sights include the Fuggerhaus, the parish church and the late Gothic merchant's house. The mine railway takes visitors to the silver mine, while the museum in Freundsberg Castle tells the story of Schwaz. The old town impresses with its colourful houses, numerous cafés and shopping opportunities.

Rattenberg

Rattenberg, the smallest municipality in Austria with around 450 inhabitants, is also known as the glass town and has a long tradition of glass art. A beautiful vantage point is the Schlossberg, from where you can enjoy a marvellous view over the Inn Valley. The castle ruins and the bee tower are also located here. In summer, the Rattenberg Schlossbergspiele takes place, offering impressive theatre performances.

Kufstein

Kufstein is the second largest city in Tyrol after Innsbruck. This town became famous for the imposing Kufstein Fortress, which plays a central role in the history of the region. Visitors can tour the fortress, which houses several museums. The city itself also offers a picturesque city walk, many historic buildings and modern elements.
