This traditional festival is an opportunity to give thanks for the abundant harvest. But Thanksgiving is much more than just a celebration of agriculture; it is an expression of connection with nature and the community. In this blog post, we will look at the origins of Thanksgiving in Austria, explore the celebrations in the country and discover the delicious foods that are a must on the festive tables.

Historical background

The harvest festival has a long tradition in Austria and dates back to centuries-old customs. Originally, it was a pagan festival dedicated to the goddess Ceres and expressed thanks for a successful harvest. With the Christianisation of Europe, the festival was integrated into the Christian calendar and transferred to the Archangel Michael, the patron saint of churches and agriculture. Thanksgiving Day was traditionally celebrated on 29 September, the feast day of St Michael the Archangel.

Celebrations in Austria

Nowadays, Thanksgiving is celebrated in Austria on the first Sunday in October. The celebrations take place in both urban communities and rural regions and reflect the diversity of Austrian culture. One of the best-known events is the harvest festival procession, in which colourfully decorated floats with harvest produce are pulled through the streets. People in traditional costume, accompanied by brass bands, sing and dance to celebrate the rich harvest.

In rural areas of Austria, church processions are a central element of the festival. Farmers carry harvest offerings, including bread, fruit, vegetables and flowers, into the church, where they are blessed during a solemn service. These services are often accompanied by folk music and traditional dances.

Delicious dishes

Thanksgiving in Austria would be unthinkable without the delicious food and drink. In many households, a sumptuous feast is on the programme. An absolute classic is the "Erntedankstriezel", a braided yeast pastry that is often decorated with sultanas and almonds. In addition to bread and pastries, dishes such as pumpkin soup, potato salad, apple strudel and dishes with fresh fruit and vegetables can also be found on the festive tables. Of course, Austrian wine, one of the country's proud export hits, is also a must.

We at dasMei cordially invite you all to celebrate the harvest festival in the afternoon with a cup of coffee and cake and wish you a wonderful harvest festival.

When the golden grain fields are ripe and the leaves are in their brightest colours, it is time for the harvest festival in Austria.
