However, it is uncertain where the tradition, which is mainly practised in South and North Tyrol, originally came from. Tales tell of its origins in the Eisack Valley, where merchants and winegrowers came together to taste the new wine - to thank the harvest workers with an autumnal farmer's feast. Another theory claims that the cattle dealers, who looked after the winegrowers' livestock, were invited to the feast at the end of the harvest.

It can therefore be assumed that it was in any case a reward before the approaching winter. It is still similar today: Törggelen is traditionally organised in a Buschenschank between October and November, shortly before the start of the contemplative Advent season. The name "Buschenschank" has its roots in the Middle Ages, when a bouquet of juniper ("Buschen") was hung from open taverns.

Nowadays, the "reward" after a hard-working summer is complemented by the attitude to life that gives Törggelen a certain flair. For many people, it is an integral part of autumn and is associated with hikes through golden vineyards and the wind blowing through the trees. Once you have made yourself comfortable in the parlour of the Buschen or Hofschank next to a crackling open fire, the actual main act of Törggelen can follow: the food. In addition to traditional South Tyrolean delicacies such as Schlutzkrapfen, sauerkraut, sausages, smoked meat or dumplings, desserts or "Kestn/Keschtn" (roasted chestnuts) are served. The latter are a particularly important part of the gathering and can also be found in the (sweet) dishes.

This is accompanied by young wine from the year's harvest or Sturm, i.e. wine that is still fermenting, which certainly contributes to an exuberant atmosphere. This may be the reason why this age-old tradition is still very popular today and why hordes of connoisseurs make a pilgrimage to huts and wine taverns.

Our insider tip:

Have our impressions whetted your appetite for Törggelen?
